Rio WSOP will be bringing you a series of tips for the Omaha beginner, although the intermediate player will glean a few good ones from this as well. You know, Omaha?

The game that looks and plays like Holdem, only with four cards? Where you have to use exactly two cards, and only two cards, from your hand and three from the flop?

Omaha is the game where you can stand to make a lot of money in online poker now. A lot of players seem to have NLHE figured out, but Omaha appears to still have plenty of fish wading in the waters. Why? Well, it’s a complicated game, much more so than Holdem.
Most of these tips will deal with Omaha High, although we will delve into Omaha Hi-Lo as the series progresses.

While some of these tips may seem obvious to the more experienced players, Omaha is such a complicated game that even these obvious tips are good ones to keep in mind.

The favorite tip: Even if you thought the first tip was just because it was the first tip, it’s also the best – Play cards that work together.

Simple, right? Yes, you want to play cards that give you possibilities to make the nut straight, a flush or possibly top set and give you a draw to improve. We will get into more possibilities later, but if you remember this one tip, you’ll be off on a good path to winning at Omaha.

What ‘cards that work together’ means is four cards to a straight, like K-Q-J-10. It can also mean at least two cards that are suited, though double-suited cards are preferred. It also means you might want to play a hand like Q-Q-J-10, especially if the cards are double-suited.

This does not mean that you play a hand like A-8-3-7 because the Ace is suited with another card. And it also does not mean you want to play a hand like 7-7-6-5 to a raise.

Another mistake people make is to assume a hand like K-10-8-7 work together. They really don’t.

Finally, this does not mean you play the hand if three of the cards are working together and not four. This means a hand like J-10-9-3 isn’t that great, even if the hand has a suited combination, because it has a dangler. See the 3? That’s your dangler.

Let’s say the 3 is not suited with another card. The 3 doesn’t help your hand in any way. There are no straights you can make with it.

Even if it were suited with another card, you would not want to play a 10-high flush hard in Omaha. Playing a hand with a dangler puts you at an immediate disadvantage because while your opponent likely has four cards working for him, you’ve only got three.

Playing a hand with a dangler is a rookie mistake. That’s why you’re here. You just turned in your rookie status.

It’s time to become a better player.
