When you get into a game of poker, the amount of money that is paid to get into the tournament is called the buy-in. This amount is usually expressed as 2 numbers for example, $80 and $10 are two amounts that can a player can bet in form of chips like in a game of ring. The first amount is for the game while the latter one goes to the coffers of the house. When combined, the two split bets will amount to $90 for a buy-in. A lot of ring games are played with buy-ins that are normally below the amount a player requires.
From the above, it means a buy-in will typically be what it costs a player in money terms, to get the first amount of chips in a poker game. Thus, your buy-in becomes your initial bet in chips. “He thought he could play like the big boys in the big games but he backed out when he heard that the buy-in is too high for him.”
For example, if there is a fixed limit game where the rules require a player to purchase a minimum amount in worth of chips. The player is allowed to buy-in an amount that is less than an average player expects to use for the game when assumed for a particular period of time. However, it will still be big enough for the player to play one or more hands without having to buy-in over and over again, so that the game won’t be bogged down by continuous buying of chips.
