A total of three bills were discussed in the current legislature, most of these were dealt with permitting snowmobile clubs to permit poker runs. It should be noted that for nearly two years now the Standish Sno-Seekers Snowmobile Club were not able to organize their poker rallies. This is perhaps a major reason which “prompted me to put in the bill,” stated Shaw, a member of the Standish Sno-Seekers Snowmobile Club.
Since the snowmobile clubs required a permit for game of chance to organize the rally, it was confused for the rally being a tournament game of chance as it was related to card gaming. The bill proposed by Shaw had required an amendment which describes in detail about what poker rally actually is and the rally is requested to be put in to a game of chance rather than being just a tourney.
If the legislature approves the bill after a signature from the governor, related businesses like snowmobile clubs will need to apply for a one time license. Such a legalization and approval is important because some of the nonprofit organizations were organizing games of chance and they were using the proceeds for their own benefits.
In the previous legislature meeting Gov. John Baldacci voted in favor of bill forwarded in favor of Maine Snowmobile Association.
Bob Meyers remarked “We’re optimistic that between the three bills we’ll be able to craft something that will help the clubs.” A favorable result for the clubs can be soon counted upon.
