Playing Poker Right

When one plays poker, just like any kind of competition or sport, you must know the technical know-how of the game, and you must have what poker players and enthusiasts call “luck”. What is this “luck” anyway? Well, just like in any card game, there’s a difference between knowing the technical rules of the game, such as how to play, the penalties, what not to do, basic combinations; but beyond that, there’s a little stock of wisdom that becomes a player’s “luck”. How does one obtain this “luck” when playing poker?

There are plenty of ways to amass this luck; basically, the formula adds up to this list: length of time you’ve been playing, the amount of money you put on the line, and the people you’ve been playing with. This is very important, the last element. If you’ve been playing poker with cousins or close friends for ten years, then you might have developed some good strategies when playing with them.

You see the big difference, immediately? There’s a difference between playing with a particular group of people for a long time and amassing experience by playing with different kinds of players in other venues. For poker enthusiasts who are just beginning, this is a decision you have to make.

If time and finances allow it, you may go out and play with other people, if you wish to discover other techniques. Technique may be developed individually, or it may be developed in another manner: by imitating and learning from other more experienced players.

But then again, there’s usually a pickle when it comes to this kind of approach to amassing technique and poker “luck”: the money involved. How much will you be able to aportion for the game? How many times a week will you be able to play? Usually these questions can be resolved easily by asking yourself this particular question: what is your long term objective when playing poker? For many people, poker can remain simple; just a card game for those beer-filled Friday nights when the missus is out with other women friends. But for some, it can turn into a competitive sport, with high stakes; this is not hard to achieve either. What one should take into consideration is the “field”. When you are knowledgeable about the field already, you would know the good spots to play poker, and the competitions themselves.

Playing in competitions usually require a moderate to high amount of skill in poker, but this shouldn’t discourage anyone. One just has to prepare well before going all out in the small time and the big time competitions. Now, the one thing that one has to remember about these competitions is that these events are always a heterogeneous mix; that is, there would be novices as well as hidden geniuses; that is a risk you would have to contend with when you join poker opens or similar events. There are no real limitations as who can join in these events; unless we’re talking about fees.
