An underdog is a player with a hand that is not favored to win the pot in a poker game. During a poker competition, a player with a very good hand is generally the person that is given the higher odds of winning the pot at the end of the game. This does not have to written down but by-standers and watchers of the tournament would expect that player with a stronger hand to emerge the favorite of the game by winning the game.
In such a case, the player with the weak or less strong hand is known as the underdog of the event. Going by statistics and the features of a player’s hand, it is assumed that a few moves will land him or her the pot in an expected win while the other who is the underdog will have to make a move by acting to overturn the disadvantage. In some games, there are upsets where the unexpected happens i.e. the underdog eventually becomes the front-runner and goes on to beat the clear favorite who had the stronger hand.
