Up The Ante in poker

To up the ante during play in a game of poker means to increase the stake or the amount of bet. Also commonly used outside the context of poker. As the game begins, a player is required to be the first in the game to take the ante challenge or make a bet. An ante is a term that is used to refer to the bet amount that is placed before a hand starts. The ante can be a small or large bet which is wagered according to the bankrolling strength of a poker player.

Therefore, as the ante is placed by each player, it is done before the dealer serves out the cards to players. After the initial bet or ante, a player may decide to make a raise which is the same thing as the term “up the ante” to match another bet made by an opponent. To ante up however is used when a dealer asks a player to pay up antes. To ante a pot is make every player throw a bet into the pot. The amount of an ante must also meet the minimum bet allowed in the game.
