Being poker champion of the world might take a freak of nature, winning a large tournament demands a lot of creativity, and playing against the best of the best requires a full fledged sicko. But to simply win at limit poker has never been fancy. And it never will be.
Stay off tilt. How can something that sounds so simple be so hard? Every poker player has to deal with tilt, that loss of control in which six minutes of bad judgment can erase an entire night’s worth of discipline.
You can make up any excuse you want later on, blame it on your love life, indigestion, or the mealy mouthed fellow who caught a one outer to beat you out of the biggest pot of the evening. But that doesn’t change the fact.
Going on tilt will cost you money. When I lived in Vegas and felt it coming on while playing at the Mirage, I’d leave my chips on the table and dash next door to Caesar’s Palace, where they had the best video arcade in town. Twenty minutes later I’d killed seven million bad guys and shot my load on Space Invaders to the tune of $12.25. But I always felt better.
When playing online, keep the video games handy on a separate screen. You must stay off tilt when playing poker. Nothing fancy.
There will never be a substitution for tight and aggressive play in limit poker. People can write books from now until doomsday about opportunities for starting off with the worst hand. They can discuss the merits of the slow play and the excitement of the check raise. But the shortest distance between two points will always be tight and aggressive.
In a limit poker game you should start with the best hand. While you have the best hand, you should bet it aggressively. Play seldom but strong. The best hand to start is usually the best hand at the end. Usually, it is.
Game selection has no imitations. Money won in poker must come from other people. It makes no sense to choose to play in games against people who are playing well. It makes no sense at all. When you sit down to play poker, be aware of the competition.
Use selection to your advantage. This isn’t fancy either. Look for players who are playing too many hands. Look for players who have lost control. Avoid bad games, and find the good ones. They’re out there.
I met a man the other day that wanted some advice. He had seen the Devilfish, poker champion Dave Ulliot, playing televised poker and he’s been inspired to start playing. What advice could I give him about learning to win, particularly he said, about acquiring the Devil’s ability to see people’s souls, to read a player like a sheet of glass. Forget that, I said.
To start winning at poker forget about fancy.
