The rules of 7 Stud are not as common as those of Texas Hold’em or Omaha. In 7 Stud Poker, the winner with the high hand has to split the pot with the player who has the best low qualifying hand. 7 Stud Poker’s rules always has a player who wins the high hand but not for the low. For a player’s hand to qualify as low, the hand must possess 5 denominations that are not higher than an 8.

Also, 5 of the 7 cards are allowed to be played for a high or low depending on how the game goes. Cards such as Aces are also allowed to be played as both low and high. However, flushes and straights can’t disqualify a player’s hand for a low. Therefore, if a player has a hand that ends in the following sequence: 5, 4, 3, 2 and A; s/he will hold a low hand that is unbeatable.
According to the rules of 7 Stud Poker, the same hand will also give the player the leverage of using it as a five high straight which can be played as high. In addition, the hand will give the player a very good chance of winning either way. For the above example, this player may have a different hand which is bigger than the 5 high straight to use as a high. One of the keys to winning 7 Stud Poker games is found in the content of the first 4 cards that are dealt out to players at the start of each round. If that first hand develops as planned, a player can be adjudged a top favorite to win the pot; otherwise, the player may get out too early. The 3-card hands used to start as explained earlier are the ones with the best chance of forming a dominating 4-card hand.
From past experience, good 4-card hands which are played with care may not win at all times but such hands have been proven to win more often than other hands. One other key factor to bear in mind regarding split pot games like 7 Stud Poker is the large difference in profit between winning the whole pot and taking just half of it. New poker players sometimes assume that 2 split pot wins can be equaled to a full single pot win which is not the case under 7 Stud’s rules. By taking the entire pot for a win, a player is able to build a good stack of chips. However, winning half a pot only places the player in front of their original position before the start of the game.
Part of the rules of 7 Stud Poker has a winning player taking only half the pot, thereby losing both the low and high. For this reason, many poker players often choose to play only those hands which afford them a high chance of winning everything. Another important rule of thumb in 7 High Low Poker games is to exit early enough if it seems like a player does not possess the best hand that can go for a whole pot scoop. The moment a hand which started out as a favorite for both low and high begins to falter by turning into a highly probable loser for any of the above; the next best thing is for the player to fold the hand.
