Stud poker variations

Stud poker has a number of poker variants in which each player receives a mix of face-down and face-up cards dealt in multiple betting rounds. Five-card stud first emerged during the American Civil War, and was very popular. In recent days, Seven-card stud has grown to be more common, equally in casinos and in home games. These two games shape the origin of most modern stud poker variations. The different variants are 5-card, 6-card, 7-card stud, Alligator, Razz, Eight-or-better high-low stud, Mississippi stud, Mexican stud, Blind stud etc.
The number of betting rounds in a poker game controls how well the game plays with different betting arrangements. Poker games with four or fewer betting rounds, such as five card stud poker and Mississippi Stud Poker play well with any configuration, and are particularly well suited to no limit and pot limit play. Poker games with high wagering rounds are more suited to fixed limit or spread limit.
For instance, a “$5/$10 seven card stud poker” game in Nevada poker casino permits $5 bets for the first two poker betting rounds and $10 bets for successive poker betting rounds. In addition, widespread in stud poker is to make the final poker betting round even higher – a “$5/$10/$20″ stud poker game would allow $20 bets on the last poker betting round only.

The bet that happens when each stud poker player has three cards is called third card or third street, while the bet has five cards is fifth street. The final round, despite the number of poker rounds, is called the river.
